What’s Better: Nitrile, Latex or Vinyl Gloves?
August 23 , 2021

Nitrile, latex, and vinyl are the three most popular glove materials on the market today. The nitrile glove has gained popularity in recent years, but what is the difference? And what kind should you use? In this article, we will explore these glove types so that you can know which gloves to pick for your application.

Nitrile Gloves

Nitrile is a long-lasting synthetic rubber that is technically known as acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber. It was developed for a variety of reasons, including common allergies to latex gloves and the lack of solvent protection that latex provides.Nitrile gloves are free of latex and have extremely low allergy rates (less than 1 percent of users).Because of their versatility (they can be used in almost all industries), very low allergy rates and price, they are the most popular type of glove in use today.

Another advantage of nitrile gloves that is often overlooked is the material's tendency to tear when punctured. This is an easy way to identify a damaged glove. Latex gloves, on the other hand, will remain intact, and a minor puncture may be overlooked. This is the main advantage of nitrile gloves over latex gloves when dealing with hazardous materials. Please note that it is important to check gloves for perforations before using them with any hazardous materials. Although the nitrile tear feature is an advantage, it should not be used as an effective preventive measure.

Latex Gloves

Latex gloves, which are made of rubber and have been used for many years, are the more traditional glove. Despite the fact that latex gloves can cause allergies, the comfort and strength of latex gloves are sometimes better adapted to the user than nitrile gloves.

The common allergic reaction to latex material is a concern with latex gloves, which is why they have been banned in some medical and educational institutions. While latex allergies are not always life threatening (though they can be), they do cause discomfort.

Latex gloves offer exceptional physical barrier properties similar to nitrile, but they do not offer any real protection against solvents, which is another disadvantage of latex materials. If chemical resistance is important to you, then nitrile would be a better choice.

Vinyl Gloves

Vinyl gloves are also popular, allergic reactions to vinyl gloves are almost non-existent, and reports of allergic reactions are rare, but they are only used in certain situations. Vinyl gloves are latex-free and are frequently the least expensive of the three materials. Because they provide very little protection, this type of glove is typically used in a high-volume environment when dealing with non-hazardous materials. Typically, we find vinyl gloves used in the food and beverage industry for low-risk tasks where gloves are worn for a short period of time.
