Released by the Suez Canal Authority on March 24, a cargo container ship named the Ever Given navigated in front of a massive cargo ship, blocking all traffic.
About 12% of global trade passes through the canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and is the shortest sea passage between Asia and Europe. Another route around the cape of good hope at the southern tip of Africa could take two weeks.
The accident has strangled the global shipping trade, and about 300 other ships were waiting to cross the crucial waterway. Maritime journal Lloyd’s List has estimated that more than $9 billion worth of goods is shut down every day in the Suez Canal, and the waterway through which these goods should have passed is interrupted.
